Collection of the Tropenmuseum

The collection of the Royal Tropical Institute was largely built up during the twentieth century. The Institute, which originally had a research body as well as a museum, was established by a lobby group of private corporations that made their profits in the Netherlands East Indies. In more recent years the Tropen Instituut or KIT has redefined itself through a critical post-colonial approach. It has been threatened with closure in times of government economic cut-backs.
