Smaradahana

The god Siwa meditates, and so threatens the balance of the world. The other gods convince his son, Smara (Kama), the god of love, to shoot Siwa with his arrows so that Siwa will return to his duty as a householder, and make love to his wife, Uma. Siwa is extremely angry, and assumes his cosmic form and burns up Smara. Smara's wife, Ratih, throws herself on the funeral pyre of her husband, and together their ashes spread desire through the world. Uma gives birth to a son, who has an elephant head because she was frightened by Airwana, the elephant vehicle of the god Indra. This son is Gana or Ganesa.
